The Fish Barcode Information System (FBIS) for fishes of Indian subcontinent has been conceived and developed by National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow, a  Fisheries domain centre under the scheme 'Centre for Agricultural Bioinformatics' of Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi. It is a platform to assist and manage the acquisition, storage, analysis and exploration of DNA barcode records of the fishes and other aquatic organisms, for species identification, resolving taxonomic ambiguities, and molecular genetic analysis. This database contains sequence information on mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) for aquatic species  along with morphology, distribution and conservation status. FBIS has browser interfaces for taxonomy applications, species identification and sequence diversity estimation at every taxon level. FBIS comprises of DNA barcode records of fishes collected from various water bodies of India, and thus complements the existing DNA barcode sequence database like FISH-BOL. The efforts will be continued to update the database with the curated and computed data on the species as well as to expand the analytical capabilities of the web interface with additional novel data mining and visualization tools. The FBIS platform would thus be useful as an identification system of fishes and other aquatic organisms for conservation and management of aquatic biodiversity.
