Research activities on fish molecular cytogenetics
The ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources was established in 1983 and has emerged as a Centre of Excellence in cataloguing and conserving aquatic bioresources of India.
Under the program on genetic characterization more than hundred fish species from different ecosystems have been characterized using cytogenetic markers. Moreover, species/population specific chromosomal markers have been identified in number of species using
chromosome banding and fluorescent in situ hybridization techniques.
ICAR-NBFGR envisages to develop a digital cytogenetic data repository for managing the information and providing access of information to different stake holders.
