Known from the Nicobar Islands. southern Japan to Palau, Guam, New Caledonia, southern Queensland, Australia, Broome and Kenya.

Cromileptes altivelis (Valenciennes, 1828) altivelis, Serranus Valenciennes [A.] in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1828:324, Pl. 35 [Histoire naturelle des poissons v. 2] Java, Indonesia, and unknown locality. Syntypes: MNHN 0000-7174 (1, dry) no locality, RMNH (not found). Synonym: Cromileptes altivelis (Valenciennes, 1828), Serranus altivelis Valenciennes, 1828, Epinephelus altivelis (Valenciennes, 1828), Chromileptes altivelis (Valenciennes, 1828), Cromileptis altivales (Valenciennes, 1828), Cromileptis altiveles (Valenciennes, 1828), Cromileptis altivelis (Valenciennes, 1828) Order: Perciformes Family: Serranidae Distribution: Indian waters. India: Known from the Nicobar Islands. Western Pacific: southern Japan to Palau, Guam, New Caledonia and southern Queensland, Australia. Eastern Indian Ocean: Nicobar Islands to Broome, Western Australia. Reports from western Indian Ocean (Heemstra and Randall 1984, 1986, respectively) are unsubstantiated, except one from Kenya (Smith 1954) which seems valid.
